Everyone has a sanctuary. A place where they can go to relax and tune out the noise and distractions of the world. This kind of place may differ with each individual but almost everyone has one common space where peace and serenity surely exists. For us, it’s our bedrooms.

Here at Mountain & Moon our bedrooms are our havelis. A place that calms us, inspires us and sends our imagination into overdrive. For those who don’t know what that is, a haveli is a traditional South Asian courtyard home built on the principles of Vastu Shastra, an ancient system of Hindu architecture which states that all spaces emerge from a single center point of the house. For us, our bedrooms are our spiritual center point. Therefore, we find it so important to keep them adorned with meaningful treasures to draw inspiration from.

We have found that the best way to create a haveli within your bedroom is by stimulating the 5 senses. What stimulates a person’s senses differs for every individual. Here are some tips you can use to turn your bedroom into a haveli:

Let’s begin with sight. Keep your treasures where you can see them. This way any positive memories that you associate with them will positively influence your state of mind.

Sounds affect different people in different ways. Find the sounds that stimulate you the most whether it be soothing chimes hanging near your window, your favorite songs on your speakers or silence. This will replace the noise of the world with the serenity of your preference.

Smell is the sense most linked to our emotional recollection. Therefore the scent of your haveli must remind you of something positive. Each person associates different smells with different memories, so find the scents of your happy past and fill your bedroom with it.

Touch is also important. Find your favorite material to touch and cover your bed with it. Be it cotton, linen, silk or leather, whatever tickles your fancy, the skin is the largest organ in your body and it’s important to keep it satisfied when you want to relax or go to sleep.

Perhaps you’re like us and one of your favourite parts of the day is to laze about in your haveli and stimulate your sense of taste. Lying on your bed surrounded by your favorite paintings, listening to Purity Ring, with a rich and intoxicating incense burning and filling the air as it floats you into a daydream of exotic destinations and wandering memories. You sip from a cup of freshly brewed organic herbal tea and let your imagination run wild as you drift into a delicious daze.

So go on, transform your bedroom into a haveli and let it be the center point of your spirituality.

If you have a heavenly haveli, share it with us. Let others be inspired too. #mountainandmoon
