WELCOME TO OUR WORLD

MM MUSE | NINA KARNIKOWSKI

MM MUSE | NINA KARNIKOWSKI

NINA KARNIKOWSKI

TRAVEL WRITER + TOTAL BABE

Nina, can you encapsulate your current life situation into just one sentence? It’s hard we know…

Embarking on as many wild, transformative adventures as I can to expand both my world and the worlds of my readers, while grounding myself with nourishing food, yoga, and lots of cuddles with my husband and our pooches in between.

Your career path is one that would inspire many and make most envious! How did it all begin and where do you see it going?

It began in a pretty traditional way – five years studying journalism and international studies at university, followed by five years as a lifestyle writer at Fairfax magazines. An ex-editor moved to the travel team, I begged her to take me with her, pretty quickly I became a writer on the Traveller team, then my husband and I spent a year living in India for his work which is where I suppose it all really took off.
I’ve been out on my own as a freelancer for a variety of travel newspaper sections, magazines, websites, TV and my own blog travelswithnina.com for the past three years, and I relish both the freedom and daily hustle involved in that. I see myself continuing to travel to weirder and more wonderful corners of the globe, telling stories that I hope get people to take trips that will change their lives for the better. I’ve also really been enjoying creating little films of my journeys lately, and I’ve been delving back into the personal essay world too so we’ll see where that leads me.

Tell us about the craziest adventure you’ve ever been on or the biggest ‘blow your mind’ moment that’s happened to you on your explorations.

My mind immediately swings to the morning I hiked up the top of an active volcano in Papua New Guinea that erupted three days later, then to the afternoon I spent riding wild horses across the steppe with the nomads in Mongolia. But my most rewarding travel moment of late was reaching the magnificent Rainbow Mountain in Peru, which I’d spent five days hiking at above 5000 metres to get to. Reaching that mountain, s
triped with turquoise, deep yellow and dusky rose from mineral deposits, let me drop these stories I’d been telling myself about being weak and not good enough, to realise I was a strong, powerful woman who could do anything she wanted to. We really do become our thoughts, and I turned mind around that day.

Any secret tips for staying happy, healthy and balanced whilst travelling?

I practice a bit of mindfulness every morning before heading out. Even just 10 minutes of meditation, gentle yoga or sipping tea helps centre me, so that I can be fully present with everything the destination has to offer.
I always take a probiotic, or even just a bottle of Braggs apple cider vinegar, with me on the road to keep my gut health (and health generally, since it all stems from our bellies) in check. Oh, and I always pack a good cashmere eye mask, pair of silicone ear plugs and some chamomile tea, because I want to be getting as much sleep and have as much energy as possible while I’m working on the road.

When you’re not traversing the globe documenting beautiful destinations and uncovering hidden treasures, you’re residing in an equally gorgeous place of the world living off the land & those biodynamic grapes with your lover… Can we come visit?! But seriously, how important is it that you have such a beautiful quiet place to come back to after all the craziness of travel?

Having a home to return to that’s calm and, more importantly, quiet after the chaos of the road is so important. Our apartment in Sydney’s eastern beaches doesn’t have wifi or TV, so when we’re there I can really focus on getting into a routine that involves yoga classes, long beach walks, having tea and long meals with my girlfriends and my family, and getting head down bum up with all those stories that need to be written. Then because the farm is so remote, I can get that quality time in with my man – we both work hard during the days, but our evenings are sacred. Afternoons are often spent wandering through the bush by the river with our two maremma sheepdogs Mintie and Milka, and nights are about cooking, sipping wine, chatting and reading by the fire. It’s essential for me to sink back into those familiar touchpoints when I’ve been away for a while. Not only to keep my relationships nurtured and to get back into the writing zone, but also to recalibrate my body which, lets face it, always gets a bit knocked around while I’m travelling.

MM MUSE | SCARLETT

SCARLETT STEVENS

V. EXPENSIVE ROCKSTAR BABE | POCKET ROCKET CUTIE | SASSY SWEETHEART.

In a nutshell, who is Scarlett?

Ciao! I'm Scarlett, I'm 24 and I live in Fremantle, Western Australia. I'm a full time drummer.

Hanging out at home with you and your pups, drinking coffee made by your lovely mama, and lounging around swapping goss… it’s easy to forget you’re a local gal made pretty damn big in the music scene. Does life still feel relatively normal for you when you’re in Perth or have things changed?

Haha, thanks guys! I think Perth is a pretty good place to base yourself. At times it does feel quite insular, a bit like a small town but it also feels like the city has really come to life in the last few years. We are a supportive, tight knit community, especially in the music scene. Nothing's really changed here for me and that's why I like it. I love going to Mojo's or the Bird and watching my friends' bands play, being at home listening to records, spending time with my friends and family and my hounds. I think whilst I'm in my 20's I'd love to experience living overseas, even if its for a few months.

You’re living a ‘bright lights, big city life’ right now, travelling around the country with San Cisco and internationally on your down time. How do you stay grounded with all the to & fro?

As much as I like being at home, I enjoy moving around. Touring can be exhausting but i've been to places that I would otherwise never get to see, from Lincoln, Nebraska in the US (not sure if I'd rush back there) to Mexico, Japan, Europe... I think it's easy to take the touring aspect of being in a band for granted, because it can still feel like work and you spend so much time away from loved ones. I've always felt extremely lucky to have gotten to this level with music and it's constantly in the back of my head how fickle this industry can be and how quickly peoples' tastes change and evolve. So I think that thought alone keeps me grounded.

What are your non negotiables when it comes to keeping happy & healthy every day?

I think having a creative outlet and keeping busy is so important. I get my creative fix from drumming, taking photos on my film camera, singing in my car, DJing, dressing up/styling, collaborating on fun projects like this! I also started doing yoga about 5 years ago. My yoga instructor's name is Kale Leaf (no joke) and he's been teaching for 30 years and has become somewhat of a mentor for me. I don't practice as much as I should but it's an amazing tool to have, being able to rely on yourself to fix any aches or pains, just knowing your body really well, I find it empowering.

You’ve got an enviable wardrobe & savvy eye for style that mixes up vintage finds with feminine florals from brands like Reformation & classic luxe Gucci accessories. We’re not gonna lie, we are a lil jealous of your beautiful wardrobe! Have you always loved fashion? & what’s your motto when it comes to curating the perfect collection of pieces?

Aw, thank you! I've always loved clothes, costumes and dressing up. I didn't let anyone tell me what to wear when I was a kid. I was a real girly girl. When I was in primary school I kind of grew out of that and wanted to dress like everyone else. My mum used to drag me to op shops and I hated it. Then, when I was ten years old we lived in New York for six months and I discovered vintage for the first time. Our friend and performer Anna Copa Cabanna worked in a store on St Marks Place called Physical Graffiti and wore the best vintage outfits. The east village in the early 2000's was incredible. I met so many eccentric, creative people living on the margins of society; musicians, artists, writers. I think the idea of not conforming rubbed off on me and my sense of style. I don't have a motto but I think the key to style is to not follow fashion or trends too closely.  I always regret 'fast fashion' purchases. I'd rather invest in good quality clothes and vintage and dress for my body.

Describe your ideal weekend in our hometown Perth …

Friday night, go to the Local Hotel and a gig at Mojo's. Saturday (this is me being optimistic), wake up and go to yoga at Off The Wall, followed by a coffee at the Cool Room in east freo and a rummage at Old Values. Sunday, sleep in, maybe visit my Nonna, hang out with friends and eat cheese.

SHANAYA PETERS

SWEET CHUTNEY | SASSY RANI | VIBE QUEEN

In a nutshell, who is Shanaya?

I am 20 years old currently undertaking a double major in Psychology! I love all aspects of the arts and greatly enjoy poetry and literature. I love going on adventures, travelling and getting lost in big cities!

Anyone who follows you on Insta (@sweetchutney) probably doesn't realise that you're not just living that glistening life, you’re also halfway through a psych degree, you smart lil mami! How is it all going and what do you hope to get out of it?

Yes! That’s true! I’m almost finished up with my psych degree with 8 weeks to go (and counting hehe). I am so excited to finish and can’t wait to relish in all the opportunities I may encounter. It’s going well so far! At this point I just wanna get my undergrad done and over with (so over it lol). Studying Psychology has taught me a lot about other people as well as myself. After graduating I hope to do further studies in Clinical Psychology and/or Child Psychology so I can go on to help other people overcome their own mental illnesses and help them realise how beautiful life can be.

We connected via social media & got to photograph you a little while ago, lucky us! You are so stunningly beautiful both inside + out, and come across really relaxed & confident in your own skin. It’s a bit of a rarity these days which makes us sad :( Do you think platforms like Instagram have helped or hindered you personally when it comes to being yourself and having that all important self love?

Awww thanks for your kind words! I was so stoked to work with you beautiful ladies, it felt like second nature being shot by you incredible creatives! For me personally, Instagram has allowed me to express myself in any way I wish to, and has given me the platform to connect with amazing women from all over the world who share the same passion as I do, which is, uplifting and supporting each other and other women. Instagram has helped me with self-love in that, yes, it is flattering to get a lot of likes on a selfie and read all the nice comments, but I strongly believe beauty is skin deep, and I do have my bad days!! For me, it’s important to centre self-love around other aspects of myself that aren’t physical. I love my sense of humour, my wit, my intelligence and my outgoing personality, which is often hard at times to portray through a picture! So yes, it has HELPED me but it hasn’t MADE me!

India to Aus to LA, you been holidaying hard girl! Tell us some fav spots?!

Yaaaas! I think I caught the travel bug! Whenever I go travelling I give my mind, body and spirit to whatever the holiday wants to throw my way which means nothing is off the table!! I was so lucky to be able to travel to my parents home town of Kolkata, India, which was AMAZING! The food, the people, the culture; I fell in love! (Highly recommend Golden Spoon for the best Kati Roll you will ever eat and Aminia’s for the best Biryani you will ever eat!) I also most recently got back from LA with my boyfriend which was equally incred! Vegas was definitely a highlight for me, exploring the strip! LA is full of amazing things to do and see! Seeing Sunset Blvd and the Hollywood Sign was honestly an iconic moment in my life for me! Oh! And also driving through Crenshaw and Compton and seeing all the familiar locations I’ve seen in Snoop Dogg’s music videos haha!

How do you stay happy & healthy?

I always endeavour to keep my mental and psychical health in balance, so I make sure I work out 3-4 times a week and eat healthy (mostly on weekdays, because weekends are for tequila amiritie?). I also practice meditation whenever I can to decrease daily stress/anxiety.

Describe your perfect weekend in our hometown Perth …

I love lil humble Perth! I just had the perfect weekend at The Blue Flamingo in Leederville, where I won a VIP package complete with rum cocktails and champagne! Not to mention the Caribbean food we got treated to! On top of it all I got to spend the night with the people I love most, and even got to dutty whine to my fave dancehall tunes!

MM MUSE | JEANNE

MM MUSE | JEANNE

JEANNE ZIZI MARGOT DE KROON

FOUNDER | ZAZI VINTAGE

Since we live on opposite sides of the world we still haven’t had the chance to meet you beautiful. That needs to happen ASAP!  In the meantime though, tell us… in essence, who is Jeanne?

This is really the hardest question to answer but I guess in essence, I am somebody who wants to flow, experience as many worlds as possible, dive into extremes, give as much as she can along the way, a little insecure at times but fearless and powerful when I know my direction.

Anyone who follows the journey of your label ZAZI VINTAGE can see all the amazing work you have done in such a short amount of time <3 How did it all begin and where do you see it going?

I think secretly Zazi Vintage has been going on all my life, whether it was making my graduation dress out of an old Ikea curtain or the many times that I travelled for days to find a specific nomadic tribe to source a special top that I saw in a dusty book ones. Last year I came across a few vintage dresses and then I gathered a lot of big ideals from my philosophy studies during an intense winter of feminism and ethics. I decided to mix both and came up with an idea that combined my beliefs of fashion, to be empowering to women on all sides of the chain, and my big hobby which is sourcing little pieces of art from around the globe.

Although it started as an idea involving micro credits and one of a kind and untouched vintage pieces, it is moving in a direction where I am creating my own collections now in collaboration with  beautiful NGO’S like IPHD and the Saheli women (thanks to the amazing Audrey ;) )

I am in India right now to design my next collection which will be made out of vintage silk Ikat from Uzbekistan and Rajasthani old mirror work. I see Zazi doing this more and more in the future. Creating collections out of one of a kind fabulous and local vintage materials and working with women empowering NGO’s around the globe.

Favourite part about being the mama of your own label?

I think the answer is already a little bit in the question. It really feels like I have made a little baby with Zazi that I learn so much from, experiment with, that develops, falls, and grows. Observing this whole spectacle is the best feeling ever.

You seem to constantly be traversing the globe from Berlin to London to Rajasthan + more! Is being on the move something you crave?

Most definitely! I discovered that the moments when you leave the idea of security behind and throw yourself in the deep, anywhere in the world or any world /subculture you are not familiar with around you, you grow. For me, consciously observing myself grow during laughter, fear and tears, are the moments in life that you live for. Once you stop learning or get too comfortable you lose the magic and in the end you have to collect as many moments of magic in your live.

Any secret tips for staying happy, balanced and healthy whilst travelling?

Ah, yes! Know why you are doing it and trust your intuition. Besides that, write down every day of the journey what you are grateful for. I am the worst in documenting and writing but I have the feeling that this has been helping me and reminding me a lot of why I am travelling.

Tell us about your connection to India & why it has become an integral part of the ZAZI journey…

At the end of 2013 I threw myself in to quite the dark Berlin party world and luckily got out of it pretty fast when I decided to make a 180 and visit the Himalayas in Nepal. On one of my first days a lady in a back alley of Kathmandu told me my eyes looked like celebration but my black clothing didn’t. She dressed me in this great ‘80s bollywood top and it felt like the top gave me superpowers. I saw it as a sign to head over to India after (sounds little extreme, but in these moments my Jeannie mind always makes great links). I didn't make it to Bombay but I stayed in Varanasi for a couple of weeks and this changed everything. I learned some intense lessons on the fluidity of perspective and how to create my own reality. It probably sounds a little far fetched but random connections with strangers over vintage has always led me to great adventures. Ever since then, I have returned to India at least 2 times a year for a couple of months.

MM MUSE | CHANTELLE

MM MUSE | CHANTELLE

CHANTELLE MILANESE

ITALIAN PRINCESS | SINGER | ARTGIRL | ANGEL

In a nutshell, who is Chantelle?

Chantelle is a creative individual, who is outgoing and believes anything is possible, seeing beauty and potential in life and people is the most important thing to live by.

You’ve just come back from a mini stint in Sydney, how was it?!

Sydney was an inspiring place, that small experience gave me inspiration towards my art and music, being in a new state surrounded by new things was an adventure. Let's just say i learnt a lot about myself and what i am capable of.

You dabble in modeling/music/creating film/ & more. Do you believe that your generation is all about the ‘slash profile’? Keeping it cool and interesting in many different ways, and not just sticking to one method of creativity?

I definitely believe there are multiple ways and methods of being creative! Being a wallflower in this generation is such a beautiful thing. Even in high school i lived by being the odd one out. Art was my favourite subject in school and my teachers began to grow tired of me, because they would hand out specific work and i would do the complete opposite, I loved to create something on my own that was personal to me. Because art, music, poetry, anything artistic should always be personal. And to me if you want to enter into the art scene, especially in Perth, following the obvious crowd becomes boring. All I ever want is for this generation to have a few misfits that don't mind playing with the rules and making it special to them.

How do you stay happy & healthy?

To be happy in life sometimes is the smallest unnoticed things, like a good book, getting lost with beautiful people, road trips, even rainy days make me happy. And being vegetarian is another way of being healthy mentally and physically, making small life choices make a difference! Looking after your body and mind is important.

Describe your perfect weekend…

Up in my loft, playing some of my favourite music and painting.

Any 2017 resolutions?

I never really believed in new years resolutions, i think every day should be a fresh start to make new decisions.

FABIENNE COSTA

CEO | CREATIVE DIRECTOR | YCL JEWELS

Who is the YCL Woman?

A YCL woman is a modern day woman, whom is living a mindful life. Despite the fast-paced society she finds herself in, she loves to step back and connect with the true essence of who she is.

What does running an ethical brand mean to you?

YCL is an extension of my values and beliefs. Running a conscious brand means that every day I am making choices that align with those same values and beliefs, instead of operating our business from a set of rules and beliefs  imposed from society, or from a place of what I think I ‘should’ be doing.

Favourite part about being the mama of your own label?

Watching it grow, the challenges, surpassing my own vision for the brand faster than what I expected, working with an incredible team and living from my heart every day.

What are some tips for up-scaling your biz whilst maintaining true to your ethics?

As a CEO I think it’s vital to make sure that any decisions around scaling and growth of a business come from your heart. Just because something might have worked for someone else, might not mean it’s the best path for you personally. Therefore, it’s vital that we grow the business from a place of authenticity, and this is something I have applied to the growth of YCL. I believe it’s imperative that ones values and ethics aren’t comprised, and that the foundation on which one built the brand is maintained as the integral structure of the business.

Tell us about your connection to India & why it has become an integral part of the YCL journey.

I felt called to travel to India within the first year of starting up the brand. I’m not too sure why, but I feel it was the culture and the people that always drew me to the country. After I visited for the first time in January of 2016, I understood where these intuitive calls came from. A lot of our designs were inspired by India and every day I am liaising with our team over there, it will be a country I visit often to design future YCL collections. I am so proud that 30% of YCL designs are now ethically manufactured in India by an incredible team of craftsmen.

Fabienne, how do you ‘create with heart’?

My designing process is quite intuitive and informal, I’m slowly having to develop more structure around it as YCL grows. However, I feel that dedicating time to design every week is important to me as a creative. I love to design from a space created from the inspiration I get from our YCL Women.
